Tau Pan Camp

Tau Pan is the first semi-permanent camp inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and offers truly incredible views from the elevated ridge of an ancient sand dune, an unusual experience in a land as flat as Botswana, and overlooks the famous Tau Pan – recognised for its stark beauty and remoteness.

‘Tau’ which means lion in Setswana, is so named for the pride of iconic black-maned Kalahari lions who frequent the camp – with a particular preference for the family tent!

Species that can be found in the Kalahari include oryx, the desert-adapted springbok, jackals, the rare brown hyena, red-crested Korhaan and herds of wildebeest.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The CKGR was established in 1961 by the British Government to protect the traditional way of life of the nomadic San Bushman tribes. The park covers an area of 52800 square kilometres and makes up an 11th of Botswana’s total land area making it the second largest game reserve in the world, the first being the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania covering 54 000 km2. The CKGR is a scrub desert with almost no surface water available.

Home to the famous “Kalahari Lions” the area has healthy populations of cheetah, brown hyena, gemsbok, springbok, giraffe, wildebeest, bat eared fox and the tenacious honey badger.

A landscape with endless horizons, the early evening air is dominated by the never ending calls of the Kalahari barking geckos.

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

The Makgadikgadi zebra migration moves east away from the Boteti River into the huge open grasslands of the Makgadikgadi Pans after our first good rains. Our camp will be erected in the grasslands just north – west of the expansive Ntwetwe Pans or further north at Baines Baobabs or Nxai Pan.

The salt pans cover an area of over 16 000km2 in the Kalahari Basin and form the bed of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi which evaporated millions of years ago.

Although Nxai Pan was once part of the great super lake, it is quite different to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans as it boasts broad hectares of short sweet grasslands with occasional “islands” of trees.  The rich grassland provides good grazing and attracts springbok, impala, gemsbok, giraffe, kudu, hartebeest, zebra, wildebeest, all followed by lions and hyena, as well as a wide array of birdlife. The grasslands of the Makgadikgadi hide small colonies of meerkats that have become habituated to people and provide a few hours of rewarding interaction. Baines Baobabs, a cluster of seven Baobab trees are located within the park. The Baobabs were painted by Thomas Baines when he passed through travelling with John Chapman in 1862.

Tour Highlights

  • 1 Night Tau Pan Camp a great first night in Botswana including light aircraft transfer Maun to Tau Pan
  • 3 Nights serviced camping in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve
  • 3 Nights serviced camping in the Makgadikgadi National Park in search of the Makgadikgadi Pans zebra migration

6 Days Maun To Maun Safari

Okavango Delta & Moremi Game Reserve

The Okavango is a unique ecosystem, a river delta located in the middle of the world’s largest stretch of continuous sand – the Kalahari basin. An oasis in an otherwise arid and inhospitable landscape, the Okavango Delta supports an incredible diversity of animal and birdlife. Where land and water meet, a mosaic of pans, grasslands, forests and lagoons provides an extremely varied range of habitats which is home to one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of wildlife. The Okavango is one of the natural wonders of the world, a still-pristine yet fragile ecosystem that richly rewards exploration.

The Moremi Game Reserve lies in the eastern corner of the Okavango Delta. One of the most beautiful and diverse of all the great game reserves of Africa, it protects both huge concentrations of wildlife and incredible scenery. The reserve consists of both seasonally-inundated areas such as Xakanaxa, and drier areas such as Khwai. On this safari, we will set out to reveal some of the secrets of this dynamic ecosystem.

Tour Highlights

  • 2 Nights camping in the Xakanaxa / 3rd bridge area of Moremi Game Reserve
  • 3 Nights camping in the Khwai Area of Moremi Game Reserve

9 Days Maun To Kasane Safari

Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park is one of Africa’s finest game sanctuaries. Situated in the far north of Botswana, Chobe encompasses a wide variety of habitats that are home to a breath-taking variety of animals and birds.

Chobe National Park Riverfront

The lush Chobe River Front is renowned for its abundance of elephant – almost certainly the highest of these magnificent creatures to be found anywhere in the world. Chobe is also noted for its huge herds of buffalo, its rich birdlife and exquisite sunsets reflected in the ripples of the river. It all adds up to an unmissable wildlife experience.

Savute Chobe National Park

The Savute is noted for the shifting shapes and transience of its most important landmarks: the Savute Marsh and the Savute Channel which supplies it. The Marsh itself is one of the most exciting wildlife destinations in Africa – anything can, and often does, happen there. Rising above the otherwise level landscape of Savute are the Ghoha and Gubatsa Hills which hide perfectly preserved San Bushmen paintings. The Savute hills have a very healthy population of leopard and the best time to see them is either at first or last light as they leave their stony refuges to hunt in the surrounding bush.

The Savute Channel is known as the ‘stolen river’ and its recent history includes several episodes where it has dried up for several years, only to flow again – seemingly at random, but in fact due to tectonic movements. This means that you could encounter either a river, or a ribbon of dry savannah grassland. The skeletons of numerous dead trees stand as mute witnesses to the erratic ebb and flow of this most unpredictable of rivers. Beyond the channel, this area consists of large open game-filled plains and is home to a variety of dry-land animals, including zebra, wildebeest, kudu, giraffe, wild dog, cheetah and lion.

14 Days Kenya Safari Tour

Kenya is the home of the Safari. The lure of Kenya as always been the same, the sheer variety of landscape, wildlife, human cultures, and experience. For over a hundred years, Kenya has attracted adventurers and romantics from all over the globe. This magical land has been the

setting of some of history’s greatest adventure stories.

This is the home of Out of Africa, a place where setting out on an adventure into the wilderness became an age-old tradition. The spirit of the Safari lives on today. The romance of sundown drinks and of evenings around a campfire with the distant roar of a lion in the African night is found in Kenya.

Lions retreat to the shade to sleep the day away after a night of hunting, digesting whatever prey they ate and building up their energy for another night on the prowl. Keep your eyes on rocks and low shrubs where the soil is coolest. Mix this safari with luxury accommodations of authentic Africa of days gone by, and you will not only have hundreds of great images but also an experience of alifetime.
